Palin Lies to Greta Van Susteren on Darfur

2008 November 11

Well, words were coming out of that blathering pie hole, so you know she was lying. In this election cycle that’s one thing we’ve learned about the governor of Alaska: she can’t speak without telling fibs, whoppers, falsehoods and deceptions. Usually they are layered upon one another and then twisted all together into a knotty and tangled web that takes some little bit of concentration to straighten out.

Yes, it’s going to take a while to parse every lie, but here’s one that immediately jumped out. It’s one she’s repeated before, but this time she was putting it to the service of showing that she really knew, like, tons of stuff about Africa: That she, governor Palin, spearheaded the effort to divest the state of Alaska from holdings in genocide world, Darfur. Turns out she didn’t. Surprised?

Here’s the truth: a bill was filed by (D) Rep. Les Gara, and cosponsored by (R) Rep. Bob Lynn to require Alaska to divest from companies supporting the genocide in Darfur. Records show that Palin OPPOSED the effort.

“The Administration’s opposition to our divestment legislation was one of the reasons we couldn’t get the bill passed. I do appreciate that they eventually dropped their opposition. But in fairness, they didn’t do anything to help when they found out about this problem,” said Alaska State Rep. Les Gara (D-Anch.), who filed legislation in 2007 with co-Sponsor Rep. Bob Lynn (R-Anch), to require Alaska to divest from companies implicated in the Darfur genocide.

So, she lied about her interest in divesting from Darfur.
